Sharon Maureen Schade Richey Backman
1932 ~ 2012

Sharon Schade Richey Backman, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away March, 2012 at her home at the age of 79. Born in Los Angeles, California, to Marlon & Nell Schade, she was the second of four sisters. She attended BYU in 1950 and married Joe Richey in 1951. Together, they raised nine children, and served in the church in many capacities. Their home was a refuge for many other young people over the years. In 1994, they fulfilled a life-long dream, serving a mission in Birmingham, England. After her husband’s death in 1995, Sharon served a mission in the Salt Lake Family History Center. She met and married Milt Backman in 1999 and together they served missions in Nauvoo, Illinois, where Milt taught at the BYU Nauvoo Center, and in Kirtland, Ohio. They have served faithfully for several years in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.

Sharon loved teaching and serving in the auxiliaries of the church and serving as a seminary teacher in Nauvoo. She enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world and hosting delicious "cousin dinners" for her grandchildren living close by or attending BYU. Family reunions were favorite times for her, and this summer she was honored with a program for her 79th birthday. She was a dedicated BYU fan, attending football and basketball games with her husband. She loved the gospel of Jesus Christ, and her faith and strength have uplifted her family and all who knew her.

She leaves behind her husband, Milt Backman, of American Fork; sisters, Mary Nell Kimball of Fresno; Carolyn Bacon (Carl) of Provo, Ut.; and Roberta Bullock (Burt)of Lake Oswego, Or. She will be deeply missed by her children, Kristine Richey Smith (Steve), of Fresno, Ca.; Joseph Richey (Roberta) of Alpine, Ut.; Thomas Richey of Missouri; Jon Richey (Janet) of Porterville, Ca; Mark Richey (Kristin) of Redlands, Ca.; Lisa Richey Roubicek (Mike) of Fresno, Ca., Suzie Richey Fitts (Stewart) of Las Vegas, Nv., David Richey of American Fork, Ut., James Richey (Heather) of Cheyenne, Wy., and step children Kris Backman Denison (Neil) of Herriman, Ut., and Mike Backman (Steve) of Vermont. Sharon is a beloved grandmother to 53 and great-grandmother to 24. She was a dear friend to so many. Her life of faith, missionary service and love will be emulated and cherished for generations.
