Ralph Bay Hutchings, MD
1917 ~ 2012

R. Bay Hutchings was born in Beaver, Utah, July 26, 1917, to Ralph Samuel and Ethel Dell Bay Hutchings. He passed away surrounded by family June 3, 2012, in Provo, Utah. He was the second of six children. He graduated from Beaver High School in 1934, Bay attended Sacramento Junior College from 1934-35 and graduated with pre-med degree from Fresno State University in 1942.

Bay’s talents included piano/organ, baritone horn, choir, debate team, acting, dancing, hunting and track & field. Graduated from Beaver High School in 1934, attended Sacramento Junior College from 1934-35 and graduated with pre-med degree from Fresno State University in 1942. He served as an LDS missionary in Switzerland and France from 1937-1938.

A Captain in the Army/Air Force, he graduated from Boston University with a doctor of medicine (MD) degree in 1946. In private practice in Sacramento from 1948–1981, Bay worked at the Sacramento and Los Angeles County Hospitals, March Air Force Base, Sutter General, Sutter Memorial and American River hospitals delivering hundreds of babies, making old fashioned house calls and was the family doctor for generations of Sacramentans.

Bay served as President of the Sacramento County of Family Practioners for two years, scoutmaster for over 10 years and team doctor and "unofficial coach" for Encina and Rio Americano High Schools for more than 20 years. He also served in the Stake Presidency for over 10 years and as Bishop of Arden Ward for five years. Bay served as Mission President in Toulouse France, Geneva Switzerland and Kinshasa, Zaire. He was later called and served as a sealer in the Provo temple.

Bay married Marva Cram on October 28, 1942, in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of seven children. Marva passed away on January 1, 1979 and Bay married Jean Lorraine Cram Griner on June 15, 1979. Jean recently passed away April 17, 2012. Bay’s children include Robert (deceased) (Janet Pfohl) of Provo, UT; David (Marilyn Madsen) of Fresno, CA; Suana (Dallas Lowe) of Roosevelt, UT; Kent (Jeannie Roth) of Elk Grove, CA; Byron (Lorna Germaine) of Sacramento, CA; Ross (Carol Connelly) of Roseville, CA; and Carla (Darrell Haskin) of Fayetteville, GA; also by his step-children Lynda (James Torgesen) of Old Town, ID; Karen (Dale Munger) of Gresham, OR; Holly (Jerry Hoke) of South Jordan, UT; Nancy (Lonnie Woodard), of Provo, UT; and Murray Rondo (Jolynn Francom) also of Provo, UT. Bay is also survived by his brother Arden Hutchings of Provo, UT; brother Gene Hutchings of Provo, UT; and sister Mary Pendleton of Payson, UT. Bay has 65 grandchildren, 128 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2012 at 11:00 am, in the Edgemont South Stake Center 2950 North Canyon Road, Provo, Utah Family and friends may call Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Edgemont South Stake Center, and also Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services at the church. Additional services will be held in Sacramento, California on June 11, 2012 where Bay will be interned at the Fair Oaks Cemetery.
