Joseph Stephen Koncilja
1921 ~ 2012

Joe was born December 13, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, the first born son of Slovenian immigrants who came to this country in 1912.

During the Great Depression, he left home at a young age and joined the CCC’s, a public works program. The CCC’s sent Joe to the Northwest where he reclaimed national forest lands. After the CCC’s, Joe returned to Cleveland and entered the Merchant Marines, working the iron ore boats on the Great Lakes during WWII.

After the war, he met and married Marie Straus and together they had two children. For the next forty years Joe was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a fireman and engineer. After his wife’s death in 2008, he moved to Utah and lived with his son and daughter-in-law.

He is survived by two brothers and a sister, his children Carol and Stephen, grandchildren Michael and Caroline, and one great grandchild, Ryan.

Funeral services for Joe will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 7:00 pm in the Warenski Funeral Home Chapel, 1776 North 900 East, American Fork, Utah. Friends may call from 6:00 to 7:00 pm prior to the funeral at the Warenski Funeral Home.
