Leland Jay Nielsen
1926 ~ 2015

On the evening of December 9, 2015, our loving sweetheart and daddy passed peacefully away due to complications of liver cancer (Cancer Sucks!). He joins his beloved mom and dad and great grandson Bret.

Jay was born August 29, 1926 in Malad, Idaho to Leland Mark and Mary Thorpe Nielsen. He was raised in Malad until age 14 when the family moved to Ogden, Utah. He joined the US Navy in 1944 serving on the USS Matanikau which was an aircraft carrier that trained pilots. He was aboard ship in Tokyo Bay when the armistice was signed.

He was an avid Jazz fan and attended the first Utah Jazz game in the Salt Palace.

In 1950, he married Norma Hipwell and became Daddy to Cheryl Lynne and Linda Lee. He met the love of his life Toni Pugmire in 1982 and they thoroughly enjoyed travelling the world.

Daddy enjoyed “supervising” the building of the Conference Center from his balcony at Zion’s Summit Condo.

Our dad loved his grandchildren and is survived by Michelle, Kathy, Jamee and Danny. He also loved Toni’s grandson, Ryan, and her 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was pretty proud to have lived to have 5 generations twice.

The family would like to sincerely thank First Choice Hospice for their tender service to Jay and Toni, and to the Orchard Ward at Liberty Grove in Pleasant Grove.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the American Fork City Cemetery, 600 North Center Street, American Fork, Utah. Family and friends may call from 1:00 to 1:45 pm at the Warenski Funeral Home, 1776 North 900 East, American Fork, Utah.
