Jane Reed Slaughter was born July 24, 1931 in Richmond Indiana
at the home of James Thurman Reed and Mae Euphemia Holmquist.
Catherine had three younger brothers; Robert Joseph, James
Thomas, and Richard Allen Reed.
She spent a happy childhood in Richmond surrounded by grandparents,
uncles, aunts, and cousins. At sixteen the family moved
to Pocatello, Idaho where Catherine attended and graduated
from Pocatello High School. She received a bachelor’s
degree from Idaho State University, with a major in English
and a minor in History. She found her first teaching job
at Mackie, Idaho where she taught English, girl’s
PE, History, and Home Economics.
She obtained a Master’s degree in English from Brigham
Young University where she also taught Freshman English.
It was at BYU that she met a blonde, blue eyed fellow student,
Larry Slaughter. Their courtship included attending nearly
every BYU basketball game. They were married on June 6,
1959 in the Logan, Utah Temple.
They made their first home in Salt Lake City on East Temple
while Larry attended graduate school at the University of
Utah and Catherine taught English at Highland High School.
They welcomed five children into their family; John, James,
Catherine, George, and Peter. Larry’s work took the
family to Ukiah, California, Crow Agency, Montana, Martinez,
California, and Tacoma, Washington. After Larry’s
death, Catherine went back to teaching to support the family.
Catherine was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed her service in
the Bountiful Temple and as an LDS Employment missionary.
She loved her Savior and family. She spent the last 10 years
living in Alpine, Utah at River Meadows Senior Living. She
