Thomas Smith, 91, of Lehi, UT, passed away peacefully with
his family gathered around him on September 4, 2013, of
complications due to an automobile accident.
Fred was born Cowley, Wyoming on October 30, 1921. He graduated
from Cowley High School and continued on to receive a bachelor’s
and master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from
the University of Wyoming. Fred served as an Ensign in the
Navy in World War II.
Fred was sealed to his sweetheart, Loa Jean Peterson in
the Salt Lake Temple on March 25, 1946; they were married
67 wonderful years.
Shortly after graduating, Fred taught mechanical engineering
at the Colorado School of Mines. He worked for several companies
as Director of Engineering. He created a number of different
companies, culminating with his consulting business, F.S.
New Products, Inc. Fred was an inventive genius with over
100 U.S. patents. He loved his family, enjoyed horseshoes,
reading, but particularly solving problems. Fred served
diligently in many church callings including serving as
bishop of the Fox Valley Ward in Illinois. He and Jean served
two LDS couples missions together, the first to the Albuquerque,
NM mission and the second to the Riverside, CA mission.
Fred is survived by his eternal companion Jean, his children,
Kent (Laurie), Fred (Marlene), Sonya Stucki (Randy), (Linda)
siblings Rawlen (Maxine), (Ida Mae), Melvin (Lorna), (Donna),
Clara (Jim), Blake (Virginia), Ellis (Donna), and Neff (Joan)...
20 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Fred is preceded in death by sons Dennis and Reynold and
siblings Grant, Rachel (Doug), and Dean.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday,
September 14, 2013 at the Lehi 33rd LDS Ward Building, 650
E. 3200 N., Lehi, UT. Family and friends may call from 6:00
to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 13 at the church, and from
9:30 to 10:30 am prior to services. Interment will be at
the Alpine City Cemetery following the funeral.
