Willes Thorne 84, of Pleasant Grove Utah, passed away Wednesday
Aug. 13, 2014 after suffering most of her life from kidney
disease. She was born Dec. 27, 1929 to Arthur Douglas and
Zina Johnson Willes. She and her sister Lois grew up on
her parent's farm in Lehi and both attended Lehi High School.
Laurel's talent for music took her to the McCune School
of Music in Salt Lake where she trained for a life-long
career of teaching piano to young people and giving service
as a pianist and organist. Laurel married E. Max Thorne
on Feb. 9, 1952 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake
LDS Temple. He was born Sept. 30, 1927 to Elvin R. and Mable
Jensen Thorne. Max grew up in Pleasant Grove where they
decided to make their home. He was a talented carpenter
who built the home in which they raised their three sons
-Willes, Steven, & Kent. Max passed away July 17, 1992.
Laurel loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and was a wonderful
example to all of her family. She was active in the LDS
Church all of her life and held many callings including
Primary and Relief Society President. She also served in
the Timpanogos Temple in the baptistry and as a chapel organist.
Laurel had a lovely home that was filled with her own handiwork.
She loved decorating, gardening, making quilts, oil painting,
crafting porcelain dolls, and best of all, making incredible
homemade rolls and apple pies. She was especially well-known
for her love of Christmas and created many memories for
her much-loved children and grandchildren.
Laurel has now joined her husband Max, her sons Steven
& Kent, her parents, and many friends on the other side
of the veil. She is survived by her son Willes & wife
Karen, and her daughters-in-law Barbara & Caroline Thorne,
all of Orem, as well as her sister Lois & husband Chad
Terry of Salt Lake. They will miss her, as will her 11 grand-children
and 19 great-grandchildren whom she adored.
