Levi Edmund Cox ended his life at his American Fork apartment on May 6, 2021.

Levi was born on June 2, 1998 in Price, UT to Michael and Darla Richardson Cox. He was the youngest of six children. He moved to American Fork, UT when he was two years old.

Through his Deerfield Elementary years, he enjoyed baseball, basketball and Ballroom Dance. He attended American Fork Jr. High and graduated from American Fork High School where he participated in Hope Squad and Marching Band as a tuba player.

He attended Snow College for one year. Then, served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Washington D. C. North Mission from January 2018-December 2019.

He married Harlee RiAnn Wendel March 28, 2020. They were sealed in the Payson Utah Temple November 11, 2020. Even with medication and counseling, complications of mental illness lead to divorce. They still hold a special place in their heart for each other.

While completing his second year at Snow he became a licensed Property and Casualty Agent for Cox Insurance. He worked full time and graduated with his Associate of Science Business Degree in May 2021.

He is survived by his parents and five siblings: Aaron Cox, Matthew (Kira) Cox, Stephanie (Dustin) Larsen, Thomas Cox and Andrea (Mitchell) Stocker.

Levi had a tender heart and a gorgeous smile that lit up the room. He gave the best hugs. He was a quick learner and often hilarious. He bowled as a teenager. He learned he could sing while on his mission. His latest interest was photography.

Sometimes the darkness would overtake him and it was all he could do to carry on. He battled long and hard to feel happy, accepted and loved. There is no shame in being ill and needing help. We all need help at times. However, no one is strong enough to battle privately. It is comforting to know he is at rest without constant emotional pain.

We trust our Savior knew his heart and mind and are grateful He will be his judge and advocate. We’re proud of all that is good about Levi and his accomplishments. We wish him peace as his journey continues. All our love, until we meet again.

A Celebration of Life was held for immediate family on May 12, 2021. Interment was in the American Fork City Cemetery.

Elder Cox … Hugs to Heaven…

All my love goes out to those who are left behind here in mortality. It is a tender, traumatic, and spiritual experience to lose a loved one. I know Levi is like the rest of humanity and saved through the atonement of Christ. The only judgement that needs to be made is the one we daily make of ourselves.

Levi was a rock star. He was a great example to so many. I love him and you, his family. It will be an exciting reunion when we all get to be with one another and share our triumphs during mortality, for I know, along with the love, those triumphs are the things we take with us. The atonement takes care of everything else. Everything.

Mortality can be cruel, salvation is always merciful.

Dear Cox family, Levi served in my ward, the Olney ward, for part of his mission. What a wonderful young man! His smile, his ability to connect with others, his laughter! I sat in on many discussions where he shared heartfelt testimony as well as personal struggles that were relatable to others. He ate meals with us many times and would often talk about his family and his fiance. Thank you for sending your son here to Maryland where he let his light shine! We love him! May you be strengthened and feel his presence during this difficult time. Our prayers are with you!

Levi was a true friend. I had the privilege of serving with him in the Washington DC North mission, and had the chance to spend several days with him as we went in exchanges, and each time he impressed me with his love for the work and the people. He was always someone I knew I could trust, and he always found a way to make difficult times easier and more manageable. I am so grateful I had the chance not only to meet Levi, but serve by his side and see how his caring heart shaped peoples lives for the better.
One of my most memorable experiences with Levi was when we went to teach someone preparing to be baptized, and I could feel the love Levi had for him and just how much he wanted the best for this individual. He radiated with charity and kindness, and I loved my time with him.
Levi was a true friend, an excellent missionary, and had a pure, beautiful soul.
I will forever be grateful for the things he taught me and the chances that I had to be with Levi.

We had the privilege of serving with Levi in the Washington DC North Mission. He has left an eternal impression on our hearts. He was an amazing leader and loving missionary. He made friends quickly and wanted more than anything to help others have a life of love and joy. His investment in the areas he served in was always 100% and he was always sad to leave his areas. He was willing to do whatever was asked of him and wanted to do it in a way that was pleasing to the Lord. He was always respectful and loving of us and all of those around him. We knew something of his internal struggles but he always found a way to rise above them to serve those around him. His life is a testimony of service, kindness, helping others but most of all following in the footsteps of the Savior. We pray for you and your family at this difficult time and ask that comfort from God will be your blessing as your lives have been changed at the loss of your precious Son. We are blessed to know him and think of him as a great man that gave so much to others.

    Dear Cox Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Sweet Levi. Our family met him while he was serving his mission. We always looked forward to dinners with Elder Cox. He lit up the room. He was charming and fun and dynamic. We have five children and he showed interest in every singe member of our family. Every single one. He was one of those missionaries that leaves an indelible mark and was truly unforgettable. He was a rare mix of authentic, genuine, and vulnerable that it made it impossible to not love him. While I cannot imagine the depth of your grief, please know that the Landrith family in Maryland are grieving with you and praying on your behalf. May God bless and comfort you at this time.

We so loved having Levi here in the Pax Ward. He was like one of my grandkids to me. He will be missed. He has said he hoped to come back and visit I wish he would have come. Because I am real short the kids of mine right along with him liked to tease me. I told them be careful cause me leprechaun dude comes out on St Paddy’s day and I would get them. He would laugh and we just connected. My daughter and her hubby loved him so too. And we still do and we will meet again. Our prayers are with those on this side of the veil. Levi till we meet again your in the arms of the angels now. ♥️♥️♥️🍀🍀🍀

I am so saddened to hear this news. Elder Cox was a favorite of ours. We are in the Olney (Maryland
) 1st ward. I still remember the first time I met Levi at a chili cook off. He was brand new in our area and he was wearing a beanie hat. Something about not having time to do his hair right. When I saw him the next time I totally appreciated what he meant. He had awesome hair! I’m glad he saved its’s debut for the right time. There were times when he was just so happy and times when I could see the dark circles under his eyes. I approached him once asking how he was and he confided in me that it had been a rough week. I knew he struggled. We love him. I’m confident he is at peace. He is loved by the Savior. He will be missed. God bless his family.

Levi served as a missionary in Olney1st ward, Maryland. He touched the lives of our family in his heartfelt desire for souls to come unto Christ. He spent many evenings along with his companion teaching our daughter and her children about the gospel. He was kind and sincere towards others. Was interested in what one had to say. He loves the gospel and wanted others to grab ahold of the iron rod. He was a wonderful missionary who served diligently. He never wanted anyone to feel left out. He loved people. Wonderful sense of humor. Our family Laughed quite a few times with him and his companion. Levi is memorable. Thank you Levi for serving and bringing souls unto Christ.

    Dear Cox Family,
Your sweet son served in our ward. (Patuxent Ward) We were blessed to get to know Levi and enjoyed our time spent with him. He had a warm smile and a very caring nature. We loved the opportunity to share meals with him, such good conversations. He really was filled with love. He was always ready to come and help when and wherever he was needed. He was quick to share his testimony and genuinely loved those he served. He will be remembered as a fine young man. Thank you for sharing him with us.

  14. Tyler Goeckeritz

Levi was one of the nicest and most amazing people I met on my mission. I had the blessing of serving with him in the Washington DC North mission and going on exchanges with him was something I always looked forward to. Even after the mission he was still a true friend and was always someone to show he cared even when it felt like no one else did. I will be forever grateful for him and for the love and care that I felt from him. My love and prayers go out for him and his family, forever and always.

Levi will truly be missed by all! We served together in my last area/ his first area on the mission. He always knew how to cheer us sisters up when things weren’t going as planned. I’m so grateful for him and the Christlike example he showed daily! You’re in my prayers and thoughts!

  16. Jeffrey Winters

I was in the Washington DC North Mission, and I had the privilege of serving with Levi in Potomac, Maryland for a transfer. He was my second companion, and I was still getting used to the mission. We didn’t always agree over everything that we talked about, but he was always kind and understanding. He was always open about his feelings and struggles, and that helped me whenever I was dealing with struggles of my own, being a new missionary and all that. To be honest, I think I was a hard missionary to deal with because I was so stubborn on some issues, but he still loved me and forgave me for my mistakes and flaws. I remember going to transfers when Levi was going home, and I was so happy to hear from him that I had changed since being with him. I will forever remember him for his kindness and willingness to forgive. He was a true friend.

I’m so sorry to hear that this happened. My deepest condolences to Levi’s family.

Levi served in my ward (Patuexent) he was one of those missionaries that get you right at the heart. His kindness, love for others, and love of Jesus Christ was always radiating through his smile, actions, and words. He was the first missionary that I ever hugged and through that hug I could feel the love and care he had for others. He was the best. I loved his sense of style too.

  18. Trudy Bainter

Levi brought such a beautiful light into our home each time he came. We loved conversing about the gospel and keeping it real. I pray that he is at peace.

  19. Linda Morris

Levi (Elder Cox) brought a fullness of love and kindness to our ward (Olney 1st, MD) and we adored him. His smile, genuine warmth and deep testimony drew others to him. My four sons cherished every moment he shared with our family during discussions, meals or just hanging out in the hall at church. He assisted my youngest son in writing down his testimony. The writing took place with breaks to leap and climb and swing after each sentence: Levi was cheerfully patient and shared that he had lots of energy too. He also shared conversations about the miracle of medicines and the struggle with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues with others in our family. His love for others was a heavenly gift. Our hearts go out to you, his family, and our prayers are with you as you navigate the world without him. He will always be remembered. He will be missed. He will always be loved as a child of God.

I think you know the feelings I have right now…..I know we aren’t supposed to be emotional, but tears flow so quickly when I think of my precious, Levi. Oh how I do love him and cherish more than ever many joyful times we spent together making Christmas goodies…. Levi’s willingness to always help me…even driving my car through the carwash for me; raking those zillions of leaves off my front yard; delivering Christmas trays; our talks; getting to be an extra Grandma; his letters from his mission…..oh how I adore Levi and will cherish always my feeling and love for him. His pain is gone now, but his love and memory will remain forever….. until we meet again dear Levi…….Grandma Lynette

I am very sorry to hear about the lost of Levi. What a great young man, with a kind and loving heart to those he meet. I had the privilege of being Levi’s Bishop at Snow College, we had many heart to heart talks and I came to Love this young man. He was willing to do anything for anybody all one had to do was asked. He will greatly be missed, but he is at peace with our Heavenly Father. God be with you and your family.

Elder Cox served in our ward (Olney 1st ward), and he was a favorite of our family. We lived having him and his companions in our home for dinner and the messages they shared. Elder Cox was such a fun addition to our ward, and we were sad when he was transferred. He lit up the room and had such a beautiful testimony. He will be missed, but I’m glad to know he is no longer suffering. Rest well Levi. We will meet again. 💜

  27. Denise Kopel

Elder Cox and I shared a special bond while he was on his mission here in Southern Maryland. We became fast friends that continued after he went home to Utah. Levi was an amazing inspiration to everyone he came in contact with and wanted to put a smile on everyone’s face that he met! He loved deeply and genuinely! He shared his life’s story with me and I am forever grateful to call him my friend and brother. In his gentle nature our last conversation he told me he would call me when he returned to Utah from his travels to tell me all about things and we would catch up, he had a lot to share share! Unfortunately that call never came! I will miss you forever and love you from the bottom of my heart ❤️ You touch my life in a special way! See you on the other side of the veil my friend, Sister Kopel

My heart aches. May peace rest upon your family, and increased hope in the resurrection.

  29. Scott Livingston

    Dear beloved Cox family –

My heart broke upon hearing this terrible news. I loved this young man so much! I’ll never forget receiving the call from the Missionary Department informing me that he had been approved for a proselyting mission. He had worked so hard to qualify for this opportunity and it was a thrill to learn of this decision. His smile and spiritual light were radiant. He had wonderful dreams and was so gifted. Words can’t express my hopes for the peace of Jesus Christ to encircle you. I know He stands close and is sending His love to assure you of the reality of His perfect plan of mercy. You are each in my prayers. I take comfort in the words found in 2 Nephi 9:41 – “The keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel; and he employeth no servant there.” I know that Jesus Christ is indeed the Perfect Judge and knows all of the circumstances and struggles in the life of His friend Levi and will judge Him perfectly and mercifully.

    With love,

    President Scott Livingston

I have known and met Levi when serving in the Washington DC mission. Levi was great man who’s attitude was positive and Christ like. He loved his companions and the people of DC. After returning home from my mission, Levi would still email me about his journey on the mission. He had the heart to spread others joy after he ended his mission. He light up the room with a big smile! “Fly high my friend.” I am grateful for meeting this wonderful man! Levi will be forever in my heart and forever in the heart of #WDCNM!
