Thomas E. Freestone
Thomas E. Freestone, 49, died of cancer on July 3, 2021 at his home in American Fork surrounded by his loved ones. Tom faced the challenge of cancer the way he did any other challenge: with courage, strength, a “never-say-quit” attitude, and a pragmatic sense of humor.
Tom was the first of 7 children born to Robert and Myra Freestone, and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in Iowa. He then served as a missionary for his church in the Spain Madrid Mission. Tom was smitten with Marie Gregory when he met her at BYU in the fall of 1993, and they were married in the Logan, Utah temple on April 22, 1994. They were thrilled to welcome sons Wyatt, Conner, and Bryce to their home.
Tom earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science from BYU, and was working as an enterprise architect for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the time of his death.
He used his professional skills while serving as a stake technology specialist, but the majority of his church service—years and years of it—was spent serving the youth, whether in Webelos, as a scoutmaster, in the Young Men’s presidency, or as first counselor in the bishopric. He also loved to coach wrestling.
Tom enjoyed target shooting, cooking, and keeping up with new technology, but most relished the time he spent with family. He consistently looked for ways to help those around him, and was always motivated to do the right thing for the right reason. This allowed him to be a strong influence for good in countless people’s lives, and he lent his strength in ways that most mattered.
We will always hold him in our hearts.
Tom is survived by his wife Marie; his sons Wyatt, Conner, and Bryce; his mother Myra Freestone of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and his siblings Ben (Shawna) Freestone of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; Ellen (Tim) Buchwald of Ames, Iowa; James (Lindsay) Freestone of Garretson, South Dakota; Mark (Misti) Freestone of Layton, Utah; Emily (Lamar) May of Tooele, Utah; and Laura (Alex) Juarez of Orem, Utah. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Freestone, Jr.
