Louise Haynie Johnson
This beautiful, bountiful earth was Louise’s home away from home for 99 years. She passed away April 13, 2022.
Louise was born on July 26, 1923 in Manassa, Colorado, to Leonard Marion Haynie and Hazel Gertrude Mortensen Haynie, a loving, faithful couple and devoted to God, to each other and to their family and friends.
She graduated from schools in Alamosa, Colorado. She was one of four children, two brothers, Elwood and Delph, and one sister, LaRue. Her siblings all served in the military during World War II.
Louise attended Utah State University (Agricultural College, then) in Logan and graduated with a degree in Social Work and minors in Music and Secretarial Science. She also attended Adams State Teachers College in Alamosa and later San Francisco State University.
She was sealed to Russell Tingey Johnson by Apostle Harold B. Lee following World War II on June 26, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. Russ served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than three years in the South Pacific and China. They had four children, a daughter, Tamara, and three sons, Russell Scott (Margaret Bates), Rand Haynie (Lynn Nations) and Brett Clark (Lygia Butterfield) Johnson. Tamara passed away in December 2014 from the effects of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Louise was the proud grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 31.
An accomplished musician, Louise directed youth and adult choirs and choruses, and accompanied soloists and groups on piano and organ throughout her life. She also taught early-morning seminary in California, and served as stake missionary for 28 months. She also served as president of stake and ward Relief Societies.
Russ served as a consultant to the Church Farm Management Company for 14 years. During that time, he and Louise served two missions, on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii and at the Sun Ranch in Wyoming where they helped open the Mormon Handcart Historic Site at Martin’s Cove. Following Russ’s passing, Louise served at the Missionary Training Center and the Provo Temple.
For the last 7 years of her life, Louise resided at the home of her son, Brett, and his wife, Lygia.
