Kevin Winter Petersen
Kevin Winter Petersen
1956 – 2022
Kevin Winter Petersen passed away on June 27, 2022 from a severe traumatic brain injury and Intracranial Hemorrhage due to a tragic bicycling accident.
Kevin was born March 20, 1956 in Clarkston, Washington to Nada Joyce Winter and William E Petersen.
Kevin grew up in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Japan.
When Kevin returned from Japan, he was very interested in keeping up his knowledge of the Japanese language. He moved to Los Angeles to work with a Japanese banking firm. It was in Los Angeles that he met and married the love of his life, Amy Lisa Pugmire.
Kevin and Amy were blessed to adopt five amazing children, Todd Winter, Breanne Renee, Cami Lynn, Taylor Steven and Curtis Jay.
Kevin loved education!! He completed a bachelor’s degree in Business with a minor in Information Systems. This path led him to a first career in IT. He worked for several banking institutions and also IBM in Essex Vermont.
In 2002, Kevin moved himself and family back to Utah and returned to school. He attended nursing school in his fifties and graduated in the top of his class all while working full time as a patient care tech at Utah Valley Hospital, and being a full-time dad and husband. Kevin was well respected by his colleagues and was offered a full-time position as an RN at Utah Valley Hospital. He worked for a couple of years on the Ortho\Neuro floor and then transferred to Cardiac ICU and Shock Trauma ICU. It was a tender experience to have his last hours of life cared for by those that he had worked side by side with in ICU. Kevin left bedside nursing in 2013, but remained with IHC, to accept a position in Informatics. This was a transition that was a “MARRIAGE” of both his IT and Nursing careers. He was one of only a few on his team that had both the clinical and technical experience.
This change in work responsibilities was also timely. In less than 6 months’ time, Kevin had his first outbreak episode and was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He received excellent care from his neurologist and was on a monthly treatment regimen. His biggest concern was that in time the MS would leave him unable to care for himself. As his family, we have found some peace that Kevin passed doing something he loved and not from the limitations that MS would have eventually had on his body.
As a family we had the privilege to train and ride with Kevin in the Annual Bike MS fundraiser in Logan Utah. Participants could ride either 50, 75 or 100 miles. Kevin always did the full 100 miles.
Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, William and Joyce Petersen. His brother Bill Petersen and sister Jo Leigh Andersen. He is survived by his wife, Amy and children Todd Petersen (Desi), Breanne Petersen, Cami Petersen, Steven Petersen and Curtis Petersen. Also, his two awesome grandchildren Nikolas Winter Adams and Olivia Rae Petersen.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to MS research in his name.
