John Dennis Horan
John Dennis Horan
1942 – 2022
Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at the age of 80.
He was born February 22, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Jack Horan and Elaine Peterson. He was the oldest of three children with a younger brother, Jim, and sister, Debbie. He spent his early childhood in Burley, Idaho and eventually moved to Kearns, Utah, where he graduated from Granger High School in 1960. Following his graduation, he joined the IBEW apprenticeship program where he earned his journeyman electrician license.
He met his sweetheart, Carolin Joy Hales, when they were 14 and she was the love of his life. They were married on Jun 8, 1962 in Kearns, Utah. They were later sealed for time and all eternity on May 11, 1964 in the Salt Lake City Temple.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served in many callings throughout his life. Dennis and Carolin served a full-time mission in Nauvoo, Illinois and later enjoyed serving in the Mount Timpanogos temple for many years. He was known as a kind man with a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved the Lord and spoke of Him often.
He always worked very hard to provide for his family. As an electrical contractor, in 1987, he started his own company, Electrical Service and Construction, where he enjoyed working on both residential and commercial projects. He gained a reputation for being an honest, hard-working contractor and was respected in the industry. After 15+ years of running his own company, he retired and looked forward to becoming a gunsmith and spending more time with family.
He had many interests and hobbies. He loved the outdoors, photography, hiking, reading, music, welding, woodworking, gunsmithing, hunting, mules and horses, and spending time with his family. He loved serving others and would often be found helping his friends, neighbors and family. He knew the value of hard work and took every opportunity to teach his family to work hard. He loved building things and learned to weld so he could not only enhance his career, but also to create functional, lasting items, like a woodburning stove used to heat their home for multiple years. He loved an adventure and enjoyed learning new skills and hobbies.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carolin, and their children, Scott (Denae) Horan, Mike (Jerilyn) Horan, Angela (Blake)Duncan, Suzette (Mike) Petersen, Teresa (Matt) Royall and Natalie (Mckade) Cook, 32 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jim (Doris) Horan and sister Debbie (Fred) Nydegger. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, located at 11162 North Alpine Highway, Highland Utah. Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 am prior to services. Interment will be at the Highland City Cemetery.
