Joy Mitchell Osborn

1928 – 2023

Springville, Utah – Joy Mitchell Osborn, 94, Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully with her family holding her hands, on January 16, 2023 due to complications of Dementia/Alzheimer’s. Joy was born March 10, 1928 in Upalco, Utah to Ira Ambrose and Gladys Mern Howells Mitchell. Joy spent her happy childhood years in Upalco full of legendary pranks, childhood adventures, night games and baseball with her 8 brothers and sisters. Joy and her family moved to Nyssa, Oregon when she was ten years old. She later attended Adrian High School and participated in basketball and glee club.

Joy lived in Washington for about 25 years where she raised four children. Later she lived in Heber Valley, Utah for 13 years and then Tabiona Valley, Utah for about 30 years.

Joy was a painter, an avid reader, writer and poet. She loved to study history and world religions, and authored a book about religious studies. Joy had a deep love and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. She loved being a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had a deep appreciation for her pioneer ancestors.

Joy loved music and taught herself how to play the piano. Even in the depths of dementia, she remembered many songs and played the piano for her fellow memory care residents.

Joy’s greatest love was her family. She was a patient, devoted mother and grandmother, and was proud of all her children and grandchildren in whatever they chose to do. Even when she couldn’t remember names, she never forgot how to give a good hug and tell us how precious we were to her. We already miss those hugs.

As a family we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing nurses, CNA’s, staff and volunteers at Ashford Memory Care and Assisted Living in Springville and Bristol Hospice for their love and amazing care for Joy. We also appreciate the professional and compassionate services provided by the Warenski Funeral Home.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Mern, Mona, and Julie; and brothers: Bud, Jean, Verd, and Ted. She is survived by her children, Jim Osborn (Jane), Paulette Brown (Wayne), Ilene Johnston (John), Suzan Spraktes (Lee), 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and her sister Loma Bennett.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Deer Mountain Ward Chapel, located at 2742 West 14400 South Bluffdale, Utah 84065. Inurnment will be in the spring at the Woodland Cemetery, Woodland, Utah.
