Roland Carl Hiltscher, 89, of Cedar Hills, Utah, (formerly of Fullerton, California), died Wednesday March 1, 2023, at Charleston Assisted Living in Cedar Hills, Utah. He was born September 1, 1933, in the city of Orange, Orange County, California to his parents the late Carl Robert Hiltscher and Evelyn Joyce Trickey who affectionately called him “Roly”.
He grew up alongside the entire close knit Hiltscher family in Anaheim, California on the family orange orchards located on Romneya drive along with his grandparents and all of his aunts and uncles. A graduate of Anaheim Union High School, Fullerton Junior College, where he met and married Ruth Ann Parke on September 4, 1953.
While completing his Bachelor’s at the University of Southern California, he worked as a classical music DJ at the campus radio station. After graduation, he worked a short time as an assistant producer for a variety show on KTLA Television. He later served in the U.S. Air Force, where he had the opportunity to fly in numerous aircraft to take in-flight photos. After the Air Force service in Texas, they moved to California where he became a courtroom clerk in Orange County. During this time, he moonlighted as a photographer eventually leading to the establishment of Roland Hiltscher Photography in 1960. Their hard work and talent turned the studio at 906 E. Commonwealth, into a premier photographic studio. His specialty was making every bride, family, executive, or celebrity not only look great, but feel great. Those who came through the studio doors and in their home (behind the studio) became part of an extended family.
As a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he believed that being married and sealed to Ruthie for time and eternity on January 25th, 1964, in the Los Angeles Temple, was the most important event in his life. He most of his adult life serving and sharing the Love of Jesus Christ with others through teaching and fellowshipping.
Roland also had a passion for the arts as he performed and sang for years in musicals for the Fullerton Civic Light Opera as well as for his church. Throughout his life he would still light up as he would recite lines as Captain Hook and sing songs as Harold Hill, from the Music Man. After retirement in 2005, Roland and Ruthie moved to Cedar Hills, Utah, where they continued to serve and share their love with their friends and neighbors.
A deeply devoted husband of Ruthie for 66 years (she passed away in May of 2020). In addition to Ruthie he was preceded in death by grandson, Cole Merrill. He is survived by children, Brad Hiltscher, Brian (Janine) Hiltscher, Brenda (Michael Iaquinta) Jensen, Carla (Sam) Merrill, Brent (Nichole) Hiltscher and William (Marie) Hiltscher. Twenty Grandchildren and Nine Great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Roland will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Cedar Hills 11th Ward Chapel, located at 10455 North Ironwood Drive, Cedar Hills, Utah 84062. Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday evening from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Warenski Funeral Home, 1776 North 900 East American Fork, Utah and at an additional viewing on Tuesday morning from 9:30-10:30 am prior to services at the church.
