Growing up in Salt Lake City, Dick enjoyed school, scouting, and many activities, including basketball, hiking, pigeon raising, drawing, and collecting for his many hobbies. He attended East High School and graduated from the University of Utah with degrees in civil engineering and architecture. He served as a US Army Engineer from 1954-1955 at Fort Ord and Fort Sill. While in the army he self-taught himself astronomy and chinese language. After his marriage to Carolyn, they lived in Stadium Village where Dick served as mayor. He earned a masters degree in civil engineering at the University of California Berkley in 1961. Working as a building engineer he worked on many interesting projects, including the Oakland Temple. Dick had a love for building and in 1966, he started Smith Construction Company. He built many custom homes and medical buildings throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Each building project was constructed with the care and quality as if it was his own home. Later in his career he worked as a Facilities/Project Manager at Lockheed Martin and Redwood City.
After retirement Dick and Carolyn moved back to Utah where they have lived for the last 25 years. As a volunteer he assisted in the completion of the Church Conference Center in Salt Lake City. Recently he studied the Italian language and made several trips to Europe where he enjoyed the architecture and art of France and Italy. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren sharing with them all that he found interesting in this beautiful world. His example as a disciple of Jesus Christ has blessed the lives of his family and those who knew him. We will all miss him dearly but find comfort in knowing that he is happy and healthy with family and friends that have also finished their mortal journey.
