Allen Wayne Roberds
Allen Wayne Roberds
1944 ~ 2023
Allen Wayne Roberds, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the side of his dear wife Linda, September 28, 2023.
Wayne was born June 24, 1944, to LaVerde Holt Roberds and Allen Junior Roberds, in Las Vegas, NV, where his dad was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base.
He lived his early years in Cedar City, UT. His family moved to Salt Lake City, buying a home in the Grant Stake, where he graduated as a Granite High School Farmer and was called to serve a mission in the Norway, Oslo Mission. He married Linda Jeanne Hammond in the Salt Lake Temple on August 7, 1967. He joined the United States Air Force and excelled in a language training program at Syracuse University, N.Y. to become a Russian interpreter. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Upon honorable discharge from the USAF, he and Linda raised their family in the Cottonwood area of Salt Lake City. He attended the University of Utah and went to work for the United States Postal Service. He especially like working in the Nixie section, where he was able to return damaged and lost mail to it’s proper recipients. It was particularly rewarding to feel like he was truly helping someone. During his time with the post office, he also worked as a janitor for the Cottonwood High School LDS Seminary, where Linda and their children worked by his side for many years.
He retired from the USPS in 2003 and worked during the Utah legislative sessions as door security to the Senate chambers. In 2007 he and Linda were called to return to the Norway, Oslo mission to serve a couple’s mission. Upon return from their mission, they moved to Alpine, UT where they lived for over a decade.
Dad loves his family, his immediate and extended. And he is incredibly loved in return. Time spent with him always resulted in good memories and lots of laughs. Dad had a knack of helping us love what he loved so we could love it together.
Dad enjoyed his 3 seasons: football, baseball and basketball. He would always pick BYU one round too far in the NCAA basketball tournament. He was a true fan.
He has a natural sense of humor, being able to laugh hard without hurting feelings or trying too hard. He is genuinely funny. He told hilarious stories and they usually involved his dearest friend, Ralph, his younger brother Russ or his cousins from southern Utah.
He loves being a Dad and a Grandpa. He gave us a love of learning and reading. He loves history and he was a deadly competitor at Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy. Dad didn’t like to travel but loved to see the world. He saw much of the United States and his mission travels allowed him to see quite a bit of Europe – including passing through Check Point Charlie. His Air Force service took him to Japan and he also treasured the gift of a trip to Mongolia to pick Allen up from his mission.
Dad was a hard worker. He grew a little patch of tomatoes off the back patio and loved to shuck corn with the grandkids. In later years, if there was a game of Perudo dice, he’d be happy to join in and long movie days with popcorn were also enjoyed. Puzzles, both tabletop and cross-word became a way to pass the time quietly.
He loves music. He willingly paid for our piano lessons, encouraged us in chorus and music classes and proudly attended our recitals. He enjoyed singing with the Jay Welch Chorale.
Dad lived a good life. In the past few years, he struggled through many health issues and upheavals. He tried to be as positive as he could but always wondered if his life had been enough. We want him to know he was more than enough and we will miss him deeply. Because of all he taught us, the testimony of Jesus Christ he shared, and the examples he set, we know we will be together again someday.
Dad is survived by his wife Linda, and his 4 children: Becky (Laron) Rasband, Amy, Emily (Darren) Gooch and Allen (Breinne) Roberds, and his grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Russell and his family, his best friend, Ralph Thompson, and a large extended family of dear brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and many cousins who share in our good memories of him.
The family wishes to thanks Dignity Health Care, especially his nurse Mary, for her added friendship in all his care.
