In Loving Memory of  Karl A Christiansen

1950 ~ 2023

Karl A Christiansen, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away in his long-time home in Highland, Utah, after a swift battle with aggressive lymphoma. He departed this world on Saturday, September 30 at the age of 73, surrounded by the love of his family.

Karl was born on September 27, 1950, at American Fork Hospital to his proud parents, Malcolm and Ida Mae Rasmussen Christiansen. He is survived by his siblings Steven, Janine (Leland) Yates, Kathy (Jeff) Johnson, and James. Karl was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law Barbara and Deb, as well as his loving parents, Malcolm and Ida Mae.

Karl’s journey through life was filled with purpose and passion. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1968. He continued his education at Snow College, where he earned a degree in Electronic Technology. In 1970, Karl served his mission in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Canada. Next, Karl began his career with his first job at Sperry, spending 33 years in electronics.

In 1973, Karl met Kay on a blind date at the Pleasant Grove rodeo. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in July of 1976. Karl and Kay’s union brought forth eight children: Kori (H.J.), Jason, Jodi (Clint), Katie, Joshua (Jessica), Micah (Alison), Nathan (Hayley), and Jami (Kevin). Karl was a loving and devoted father, always providing guidance, love, and unwavering support to his children. His legacy lives on not only through his children but also through his 31 cherished grandchildren.

Scouting played an important role all throughout his life, both as a young man and as a leader. He was an Eagle Scout, went to Woodbadge, and truly enjoyed adventuring with other scouts and leaders. He embraced the motto, “Be prepared.”

In 2005, Karl embarked on a new chapter in his life when he became a Corrections Officer for the Utah State Prison, dedicating himself to maintaining order and safety in a challenging environment. In preparation for his role, he frequently out-performed younger men in the training challenges, a fact in which he took great pride. He served with integrity and professionalism, making a difference in the lives of those he encountered. Karl retired in 2016, leaving a legacy of dedication and commitment.

Karl was a true ham. He earned his general license in ham radio communication, with the call sign N7PLI. Roger that? He utilized these talents to help with parades, races, and on the Timpanogos Emergency Response Team.

He was also a skilled craftsman and handyman: fixing and maintaining cars, remodeling the house, finishing the basement, building a deck, even down to small electronics, like watches or toys.

But there was another side to Karl that not everyone may have known. Karl had a deep love for music and a talent for playing the drums. In his younger years, he was a passionate musician who played the drums in a rock band. He enjoyed nothing more than getting behind the drum kit, playing some of his favorite tunes, and even lending his vocals to the songs. Some of his favorites to play – and sing! – with the band were classics like “Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog” and “House of the Rising Sun.” His musical talents brought joy to many and showcased his creative spirit.

Occasionally, Karl would take to the piano and treat the family to a lively rendition of “Boogie Woogie.” His musical performances were always a delight to those fortunate enough to witness them.

Karl loved his grandkids dearly and could always be found with a toddler or two near him. He would enchant them with a full-body performance of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” or “I’m a Little Teapot,” leaving them giggling with delight.

In the spring of 2021, Karl began a service mission tending to the Bishop’s Storehouse Garden which continued until he and Kay began serving as missionaries at the FamilySearch Center in Lehi. He was known for his tech smarts and wit at the library, and dearly loved by the other missionaries and patrons who would visit.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Aspire Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate hospice care during Karl’s final weeks. Their care and support provided comfort to both Karl and his family during this challenging time. We also deeply appreciate the support shown by members of the Highland 6th Ward.

Karl A Christiansen will forever be remembered as a loving husband, a dedicated father, a cherished grandfather, and a public servant who contributed to the well-being of his community. His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
