Vern Leon Halversen
1934 ~ 2023
We share the passing of Vern Leon Halversen, age 89, who left this world on October 27, 2023, in Lindon, Utah. Vern was born March 15, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was a graduate of East High School. His parents were Leon Lemon and Nisha Seamons Halversen who were blessed with four sons, Vern, Brent, Gary, and Stephen.
He will be extremely missed by his wife of 65 years, Marilyn Verle Wood who he married on March 21, 1958, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together they raised six children, Gregory (Karen), Bradley (Jenny), Denise Sellers (Tom), Joelle McGlothlin (Kris), Lynette Gallegos (Jon), and Doug Halversen. They have 33 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren with a few more on the way.
Vern served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Johannesburg, South Africa. He served in many leadership positions in the church, including bishoprics, high councils, and as the Vietnamese Branch President in Oakland, California. Vern served as an ordinance worker for over fourteen years in the Oakland, California and Timpanogos, Utah temples.
Vern graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in business. While at the University of Utah he was named the top cadet in the Air Force ROTC and served as an Air Force reservist. He spent the first part of his career in retail working for the Keith O’Brien department store in Salt Lake City. This was followed by management positions at Macy’s in California, and Bon Marche in Washington. He then changed careers and worked with his brother Brent, as an accountant, until he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Brent Halversen, and three of his grandchildren. Vern’s sense of humor, humble testimony of Jesus Christ, and love for his family will be truly missed. Although we are sad at his passing, we know he is happy to now be with those family members who passed on before him.
