James R Ashton

1938 ~ 2024

James R Ashton passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on January 19, 2024 at Mountain Point Holy Cross Hospital.

Jim was born May 28, 1938 in American Fork, Utah to James Lawrence and Reva Richins Ashton.  He was the second of four children and grew up in American Fork.  In high school he lettered in both track and football.  After graduating from AF High, Jim was drafted into the Army where he worked in communications.  After his time in the Army, his training led to his job at the phone company, and he ended up working there for his entire career of over 30 years.

Jim met his sweetheart, Jean Hopkins, at a party and they were married on May 19, 1962 in Delta, Utah.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.  They started their family in American Fork and then moved to Alpine where he made many lifelong friends and enjoyed frequent backyard visits from the many deer and other wildlife in the area.

Jim lived a full life and was happiest spending time with his family and friends and had a special relationship with each of his loved ones.  He enjoyed bowling, RC planes, puzzles, and going out to breakfast with friends and family.  He took pride in his yard and loved puttering in his garage and could fix anything.  He was always willing to help others when needed.

We will miss his fun sense of humor, his constant teasing, and are grateful of his example of a strong work ethic and his love of his family.  He was completely dedicated to Jean, his eternal sweetheart, for over 61 years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jean; five children, Todd Ashton, Danielle (Jay) Christensen, Brandon (Michelle) Ashton, Jennifer Ashton and Bradley Ashton; 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Sharleen, Orin Don and Joan and Daughter-in Law, Lisa.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at the LDS chapel located at 890 North Heritage Hills Drive, Alpine Utah.  A gathering will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a brief memorial service at 11:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, please take someone you love to breakfast.
