Hal Jean Ingram passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, at his home in Highland, Utah. He was born on June 28, 1925, in Woods Cross, Utah, to Collier Thomas Ingram and Orla Argyle. His parents died when he was a toddler, and he was raised with his brother Bob by his beloved aunt, Maude Ingram.
On August 6, 1933, Hal was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the old tabernacle in Nephi, Utah. Hal always had a strong and unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a faithful member of the Church throughout his life and served in numerous positions.
Hal’s early schooling was in Nephi, Utah, graduating from Juab High School in 1943. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.
Hal loved this country. When he graduated from high school we were in the midst of World War II. He immediately enlisted, and just five days after he graduated, he departed for service in the US Coast Guard. He served on the USS Shawnee, carrying out anti-submarine patrol and search and rescue operations in the North Pacific. The ship’s home port was in Eureka, California. Hal gained the rank of Second-Class Petty Officer and was the ship’s quartermaster and signalman. He worked on the bridge of the ship as an assistant to the officer of the deck. His duties included steering the ship, plotting courses, taking astronomical sitings necessary for navigation, keeping the charts and ship’s log,
and signaling other ships or the shore by semaphore or Morse code using high beam spotlights. The Shawnee was at sea for a week, then in port for a week, alternating sea duty with another cutter. When at sea, Hal was seasick the entire time. He earned the American Area Campaign, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign, and World War II Victory Ribbons. After three years of military service, he received an honorable discharge on March 28, 1946.
Hal was married to Frances Edith Johnson on June 28, 1946, in Pepperwood, California. Frances was baptized into the Church on March 3, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 3, 1952. They had three children: Daniel Irwin Ingram (deceased), Mary Susan Ingram, and John Thomas Ingram. Hal and Frances were divorced on April 25, 1974.
Hal’s professional career consisted primarily of working for the federal government. He was employed in Washington, D.C., by both the Headquarters, U.S. Air Force, and the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, as chief consultant for petroleum fuel facilities. He was involved in all aspects of design, construction, maintenance, and operation of petroleum terminals, pump stations, transfer pipelines, storage tanks, fuel receiving and dispensing facilities, aircraft fueling systems, and fire prevention in the handling of petroleum products. He also furnished consultant services to the Defense Department’s Engineering Field Divisions throughout the world, represented the Air Force and Navy
Departments on NATO Committees, and responded to inquiries from foreign governments on all matters pertaining to petroleum fuel facilities. He played a critical role in developing high-speed pumping depots for rapidly fueling military jets, and in 1981 he was selected for the Navy Department’s most prestigious engineering award, “Engineer of the Year.”
Hal married Irene Brown Rameson on August 14, 1974, in Provo, Utah. Irene and her five children and their families were a great blessing to Hal. From Irene’s five children and Hal’s two living children, they have a legacy of 28 grandchildren and 84 great-grandchildren. Hal’s beloved Irene preceded him in death on April 15, 2009. They had 35 wonderful years together.
On February 12, 2014, Hal married Carol Rameson Biesinger in Highland, Utah. They had 10 splendid years together, even traveling to Israel. Hal was one of the oldest persons to ever go through
Hezekiah’s Tunnel.
Hal is survived by his loving wife Carol; his children, John Ingram (Suzanne) and Mary Campbell (Philip); and his stepchildren, Connie Biesinger, Susan Wilson, Richard Rameson (Tamera), Linda Dearth (Randy), and Roxy Rameson. He is also survived by his loving cousin, Tom Wolf.
