Bertina Alice Wilding Steiner

1934 ~ 2024

Bertina Alice (Wilding) Steiner, 89, passed away peacefully Sunday morning June 9, 2024. She was born October 23, 1934 in Rexburg, Idaho to Frank and Alice Wilding. She lived her early years in humble circumstances in Pratt Ward near Driggs, Idaho on the family farm. She attended grammar school there, traveling to and from school in a horse-drawn school “bus” that was heated with a pot belly stove.  It’s here that she was introduced to hard work, perseverance, and industry; qualities that were an integral part of her life.

The family later moved to Sugar City, Idaho when Bertina was eight years old.  She graduated from Sugar-Salem High School and later earned her cosmetology certification, using those skills she acquired throughout her life.

She married the love of her life, L. Dale Steiner on November 3, 1955 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple.  She and Dale were blessed with four lovely daughters, often commenting that they “specialized” in all girls.  Bertina was a devoted and loving wife, caring for Dale who suffered from Parkinson’s disease for decades.

She lived her adult life on a small farm west of Rexburg, Idaho, where she and her family raised cows, pigs, chickens and various other farm animals, while growing various crops such as wheat, barley, and hay.  She was famous for her flower and vegetable gardens where she raised good flowers, good vegetables, and good girls.  She lived the last few years with family in Utah.

Bertina was an accomplished seamstress and cook, as well as an expert in many forms of handwork, including knitting, quilting, crocheting, and painting; learning those skills from her mother and passing them on to her girls.  She has created countless quilts, afghans, and articles of clothing.  She also earned her “play” money as an Avon representative.

She had a love of pink carnations, berries and cream, and sugar.  She was known to have a few raspberries with her cream and she always had candy dishes readily available throughout her house so as not to be too far from a sweet snack (her grandchildren appreciated those always-full candy dishes).

Bertina was a life-long devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and of the plan of salvation. What a sweet reunion she is having!

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Highland Glen Memory Care Center who so gently and patiently cared for Bertina over the last several months.  They are angels.

Bertina was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Oldham Wilding and Alice Jennette (Knight) Wilding, husband, L. Dale Steiner, daughter Jeanine (Steiner) Jones, brothers Verle and Harlo Wilding, and sisters Carol (Wilding) Orme and Darlene (Wilding) Walters.  Bertina is survived by her brother Nile Wilding of Blackfoot, Idaho, sisters Loudene (Wilding) Dove of Rexburg, Idaho, and Adelle Wilding of St. Anthony, Idaho, daughters Dalene (Doug) Golding of American Fork, Utah, Linda (Brad) Waddoups of Pleasant View, Utah, and Beth (Quinn) Ard of Stansbury Park, Utah, and son-in-law David Jones of West Point, Utah.  She has ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
