Raymond W. Hoglund
Raymond Walter Hoglund, 90, passed away on February 8, 2021 in Cedar Hills, Utah at the home of his daughter, Noreen. Ray was born on March 2, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Florence (McNeil) Hoglund.
After dropping out of High School, Ray enlisted in the US Navy. After boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, he was a crane operator at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida (1947-49). While aboard the USS Macon, Ray volunteer for Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training (EOD) in Indian Head, Maryland. His next assignment with EOD was in Guam (1950-52) where he earned his GED. During Ray’s time at West Loch, Hawaii (1952-54), Ray was among the first in the US Navy to learn to use SCUBA. This knowledge led to the opportunity to be a plank owner at the Underwater Swimmers School in Key West, Florida (1954-57), the Navy’s first school to teach SCUBA to all branches of the military. While Ray was doing Refresher training in Maryland, he met Iris Laurene Jenson and they were married on October 10, 1956 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Ray next served aboard the USS Midway (1958-60) and then back to West Loch, Hawaii (1960-65). Ray retired being an EOD instructor at the Navy school in Indian Head, Maryland (1965-67). He found an exceptional quality of men that could be counted on in the Navy’s EOD community.
Ray graduated from Weber State College (1970), University of Washington (1971) and University Associates in (1992) He worked at the Ricks College Library until his retirement in 1991) Ray lived a life of kindness, serving through church, work and especially his family. He could always be counted on to help. Ray had a sense of humor and worked hard to make a difference and left the world better than he found it.
Ray is survived by daughters, Tomajean Fee, Noreen (Eric) Johnson and Raelyn (William) Webster; grandchildren, Rochelle (Robert) Jackman, Kimberli Johnson, Megan (Bryce) Bristow, Danny Johnson and Jacob Johnson; great-grandchildren, Fiona and Rory Bristow; preceded in death by his wife, Iris; parents Walter and Florence; siblings, Emma, Marcus, Pearl, Melvin, Dorothy and Jeanette.
