Richard L. Westerwelle, 89, of Highland, died May 30, 2021, at his youngest daughter’s home in Spanish Fork.

Richard was born December 6, 1931, in Du Quoin, Illinois, to Louis and Nina Ireland Westerwelle.  He married the late Joan L. Strebel in 1956. They had five children, Buddy, Neilla (Ann), Richard, James, and Toni.  He later married the late Connie Carter in 1978.  

Richard loved that he was able to serve his country for eight years in the U.S. Navy, 1951.  He was aboard the USS Weiss APD 135 and USS Askari ARL 30, he was awarded the National Defense Service, Korean Service and United Nations Service Medals. 

Dad loved gardening, fishing, and anything involving the outdoors.  He loved to travel and go on drives.  Richard worked and retired from Reilly and Tar Chemical, he was a very strong and dedicated worker.

He leaves behind his children, Neilla Ann (Ron) Measom, James Westerwelle, Toni (Mike) Money.  He had ten grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. Richard also leaves behind his number one companion, his dog Abe. 

He is preceded in death by his two wives, Joan and Connie, his children Buddy and Richard.  He is also preceded in death by his sisters Freda, Margie, Ella Mae, Agnes, Alice and Francis. 

We would like to thank all his friends and neighbors in Highland who helped him through his journey.  A special thanks to Karl and Kay, who looked after him over the many years.  Thank you to all the healthcare nurses and providers, without all your love and support he wouldn’t have made it this long.  

Graveside services will be held at Highland Cemetery, 6200 West 11000 North, Highland Utah on Friday, June 4th at 11:00 am.
