Shirley Rae Carey passed away peacefully on August 6, 2021 from a rare form of blood cancer. 

She was born on January 11, 1941 in Cody, WY. She was the oldest of four children born to Lorraine and Walter Christler. She loved growing up in Cody and often told stories of driving down Main Street with her feet behind her head while her sister operated the pedals. She graduated from Cody High School in 1959.

Shirley later met and married John Edmund Carey on March 31, 1961. They lived many places in the mid-west including Olathe, KS and Littleton, CO. They came home to Kansas City and retired there. Ed and Shirley were married for 58 years and had 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; parents, Lorraine and Walter; and sister, Jacque. 

Shirley is survived by her sister, Bonnie Cox; brother, Duffy Christler; son, John Edmund Carey III; daughter, Kathy Griffiths; daughter, Pam Storlie; and son, Phil Carey. She will be missed by her 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. 

Shirley had many talents and she loved her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loyal friend and welcomed all into her home. Shirley was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.

A private graveside service will be held in Kansas City.
