Rex Bruce Hayes
Rex Bruce Hayes was born on 25 July 1934 in Moab, Utah, the son of Edgar Bruce Hayes and Genevieve Johnson Hayes. He graduated from Grand County High School in 1952. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Eastern Canada from 1955 to 1957. He attended the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, where he met and married Patricia Bringhurst in the Los Angeles Temple on 20 June 1958. He earned a Bachelor’s in agriculture from BYU in 1960. He earned a Master’s degree in education from Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) in 1964. He taught at San Luis Obispo High School for 13 years, before moving to Ukiah, California in 1975, where he established the horticulture department at Mendocino College. He taught there until he retired in December 1993. He also provided financial planning services for clients. In 2005, he and his wife moved to Cedar Hills, Utah.
He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among the many callings he held, he served as a seminary teacher, bishop, stake president, and patriarch. In the last years of his life, he devoted the majority of his time to family history and temple work.
He was no ordinary man. He loved deeply and easily; he was an eternal optimist; he loved the Savior and died bearing testimony that He lives. He loved his sweetheart wife and treated her like a queen. He loved his children. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved his garden. He loved his friends. He loved serving in every capacity. He loved life.
He passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife, all his children, and several grandchildren on Monday, 7 February 2022. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Bringhurst Hayes, his children Julia Hayes Fletcher (Scott), Karen Hayes Scott (Steven), Ilene Hayes Hunt (Jeffrey), and Elden Bruce Hayes (Michelle), 14 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.
