Joan Louise Savage

1931 – 2023

 

Joan Louise Savage reached the end of her wonderful life on July 19, 2023, at the age of 92.  Born Joan Louise Mouritsen in Rock Springs, WY on April 22, 1931,

Joan’s family moved during her primary school years and was raised in Phoenix, AZ. After graduation from Phoenix Central High School in 1948, she attended Stanford University where she earned her Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Speech Therapy. After graduation from Stanford she took a position teaching for the American Schools in Heidelberg, Germany where she met her husband, Shyrl Ben Savage of Bicknell, UT who was serving in the United States Army.

Joan and Shyrl were married and sealed for Time and All Eternity on August 25, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were married for 59 years prior to Shyrl’s passing.

She lived in San Jose(CA), Tucson (AZ) Payson (AZ) and Orem (UT). Joan loved the arts, particularly modern dance which she both performed and taught all through her college years and in San Jose, CA.  Joan also loved to draw and paint. Many of her pieces hang on the walls of family and friends.  She passed her love of the arts and music on to her children. 

Joan was very active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she held many leadership positions in Young Women and Relief Society. Joan and Shyrl served missions for the Church in Chicago, IL and Tucson, AZ.

 Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Shyrl Savage and Grandson Joshua Corthell. She is survived by her five children: Steven Savage (Lorraine); Lisa Gundy (Ray); Holly Peterson (Glenn); Taralyn Sorenson (Jay); and John Savage (Mary). She also leaves behind her 18 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sisters, Maren Mouritsen, and Tamara Quick.

Funeral services for Joan will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at 11:00 am in the Canyon View 10th Ward Chapel, located at 762 East 1200 North, Orem, Utah 84097. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Saturday morning from 10:00-10:45 am prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery, 6200 West 11000 North, Highland, UT 84003.
