Carolin Joy Hales Horan
Carolin Joy Hales Horan
1942 – 2023
Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 surrounded by her family.
She was born December 28,1942 in Salina, Utah, to Orlo Franklin Hales and Roena Joy Taylor. She was the oldest of three children with two brothers, Bob and Dent.
Carolin spent her childhood in Aurora, Utah later moving to Kearns, Utah where she met her sweetheart John Dennis Horan when they were 14. Carolin started serving others at a young age, taking care of her younger brothers while their mother was at work. During her junior and senior years of high school, she served as a caregiver to both her Grandma Taylor in Aurora, Utah and Grandma Hales in Redmond, Utah. She then moved to California where she graduated from Granada Hills High School in 1961. After graduation, Carolin moved back to Utah and began working as a secretary. It was at that time that she reconnected with Dennis. They were married on June 8, 1962 in Kearns, Utah and later sealed for time and all eternity on May 11, 1964 in the Salt Lake Utah Temple.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many callings throughout her life. She was an example to everyone by accepting and fulfilling her callings to the fullest, and always seemed to go above and beyond the mark. Carolin showed her dedication to the gospel through her actions by loving and serving others. When others needed strength, she was the first to offer prayers, compassion, and support.
Carolin and Dennis served a full-time mission in the Illinois, Nauvoo mission and later enjoyed serving in the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple for many years in the baptistry, and Carolin also served as a recorder.
She found joy working as an Avon lady and created life-long relationships through her visits selling Avon. She felt blessed that through her extra income, she was able to support her oldest son Scott on his mission, and continued supporting each child financially with their extracurricular activities. She excelled in her career and was a part of the President’s Club for over ten years.
Carolin’s main priority was serving her family. She enjoyed serving as a room mother and attended as many of her kids and grandkid’s sporting events, school plays and programs as possible.
She loved growing flowers and found great satisfaction working in her yard. In the late summer and early fall you would find her in the kitchen teaching her children how to make jams, and bottling tomatoes, peaches and pears. A fond memory of her children was coming home from school to the smell of warm fresh bread when you walked into the house. Mom’s sheet brownies, rainbow jello, and orange rolls were a family favorite.
Carolin is survived by her children, Scott (Denae) Horan, Michael (Jerilyn) Horan, Angela (Blake) Duncan, Suzette (Michael) Petersen, Teresa (Matthew) Royall, and Natalie (Mckade) Cook, 32 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren with two more on the way. She is also survived by her brothers Bob (Karen) Hales and Dent (Deborah) Hales. She was preceded in death by her parents Orlo and Joy, as well as her husband Dennis.
