Bertha Joan Cooper
Bertha Joan Cooper
1928 ~ 2024
Adored mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Bertha Joan Cooper, passed away peacefully with her family at her side, on August 24, 2024 at the age of 95.
She was born October 15, 1928 in Provo, Utah to Loren Ezra Carter and Clara Hoier Carter. She was the youngest of 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. Bertha’s fondest memories always included her family. She spoke lovingly of attending the circus with her father and siblings, walking to Startup Candy Company with her mother for an afternoon treat, putting pennies on the train tracks with her brother to watch the train run over them, and watching her sister and brother-in-law clear the floor as they danced at Rainbow Gardens. She was also especially proud of her 5 brothers, who all served in defending our country during World War II. Bertha loved her parents and siblings.
In 1948 Bertha married Richard S. Allen, and together they had 4 children that they cherished: Sharon, Jan, Richard and David. Bertha was a proud mother. She taught her children many important life lessons such as how to cook, sew and can food. She enjoyed spending time with her family traveling, baking and boating and she always made holidays extra special in their home, especially Christmas. Bertha adored her children.
In 1976, Bertha married James Robert “Bob” Cooper, and they were later sealed in the St. George Temple for time and eternity. While living in St. George, Bertha and Bob had many visits from family members and enjoyed arrowhead hunting, playing dominoes, looking for satellites and for Willy the one-eyed frog, and making homemade bread and cookies with them. St. George was a favorite vacation destination for all their grandkids, and countless memories were made there. Bertha was an exceptional grandma and loved her grandkids with all her heart!
Throughout her life, Bertha was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She and her sweetheart Bob served an 18-month mission in the late 1990s at Cove Fort, Utah. She still sang in her branch choir at the age of 95. Bertha’s love for the Savior manifest itself in the way she cared for and loved others.
Bertha is survived by her children Sharon Jones and David Allen, son-in-law Bruce Smith, daughter-in-law Laura Allen, 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband Bob Cooper, daughter Jan Smith, son Richard Allen, grandson Daniel Spears and son-in-law Ron Jones. Our family would like to thank the compassionate staff and residents at Highland Glen Assisted Living for the love and care they have shown Bertha during the past several years and Suncrest Hospice for the care they provided in Bertha’s final weeks.
Funeral services for Bertha will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 12:00 noon in the Highland East Stake Center Chapel, located at 4679 West 11000 North, Highland, Utah. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday morning from 10:30-11:30 am prior to services at the church.
