Nancy Ann Smith Pontious
1953 ~ 2024
Nancy Ann (Smith) Pontious, age 71, of Pleasant Grove, Utah passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones and took the “Ride of the Valkyries”.
Nancy was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 30, 1953 to Mary Willa Story and Milton Ashby Smith. She was the oldest and the shortest of six kids: David, Gail, Mark, Janice, Duane.
She loved learning and enjoyed getting her education at many different universities, including SUU, where she fell in love with the Shakespeare Festival, BYU, where she studied French and had the opportunity to visit France, and the U of U where she ultimately graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English.
Nancy was a wonderful mother to her four children Jonathon, Dominique, Alicia, and Emily. She used her imagination to create a magical childhood full of stories, adventures, and humanitarian efforts. She spent her days serving others and her hands were never empty. She made baby hats and blankets, washcloths, handy towels, aprons, coloring pages, meals, and she crocheted enough leper bandages to wrap around the world. Nancy was a wonderful and fun woman who was loved by many friends with whom she shared lunches and book clubs. She was known for reading up to ten books at a time, and she passed down her love of reading to her kids, grandkids, and anyone she met. She met her husband, Timothy (Coach) Pontious, at American Fork High School, where they both worked, and he serenaded her with The Beatles: “Her name was Magill, and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy.” Their courtship included reading many books together including Forest Gump where they laughed so hard they cried. Nancy called Coach her Knight in Shining Armor and they were married in February of 2001. Their combined family includes 12 children, 28 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Timothy (Coach) Pontious; her children, Jonathan (Chrissy), Dominique (Tyler), Alicia, Emily (Steve) and her grandchildren; Calvin, Lily, Greyson, Ava, Emmett, Jemie, Lana, Willa, Wesley, Camille, Desmond, Claire, and Callum.
