Roy Aston Gladwell

1936 ~ 2024

Roy Aston Gladwell, cherished grandfather, father, and husband, passed away peacefully in his home in Highland, Utah on April 11, 2024. He was 87 years old.

Roy was born October 15, 1936 in Whittier, California to beloved parents Roy Edward Gladwell and Sherdena Aston.

Roy graduated from Whittier High School, and soon after served in the U.S. Air Force for four years as an aircraft mechanic. He specialized in servicing helicopters and this became his vocation for almost 40 years. Roy met his wife, Judith Ann Moon, on a lucky blind date. Not long into their courtship, Judi introduced him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Roy was baptized prior to their marriage and he remained an active member, touching many lives in his service to others. Roy married Judi on July 15, 1967 in the Los Angeles California Temple.

Roy is survived by Judi; their three children: Karen (Rex) Waugh, Steven (Megan) Gladwell, Larry (Paula) Gladwell; his son Kenneth Gladwell from a previous marriage; 11 adoring grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his sisters Louise Calvert and Sylvia Bonner.

Roy was fond of his property and the home he constructed in Norco, California, where he and his family resided for 45 years. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease for almost three decades, Roy thrived on hard work. He enthusiastically pursued numerous hobbies, including car restoration, carpentry, engraving, hunting, fishing, and traveling with Judi and their friends. However, his lifelong passion was scouting. As a Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout chairman, he mentored and guided over a thousand young men in achieving their Eagle awards. (He may have intimidated one or two of those boys.)

Roy was well known for his trademark handlebar mustache, even claiming top prize in the “Mr. Whiskers” contest at the Norco Fair. At heart, Roy was a cowboy and mountain man. He will be remembered as a caring soul who was devoted to his family and friends.

All who loved him are invited to a memorial service in his honor on May 11, 2024 at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 6722 West 10400 North, Highland, Utah. The service will also be broadcast on a livestream at https://youtube.com/live/0zXWoAUlRgU?feature=share
